Morristown-Beard School is an independent coeducational day school, serving students in sixth through twelfth grade, located in Morristown, in Morris County, New Jersey. Morristown-Beard was established by Henry Lee Higginson in 1891 as Morristown School, which in 1971 merged with Miss Beard's School to become the Morristown-Beard School. Dr. Alex Curtis is the Head of School.

History

Morristown School was founded in 1891 as St. Bartholomew's School by the Episcopal Church. The Rev. F.E. Edward was the first headmaster. From 1891 to the fall of 1896, the school was located in the Normandy Park section of Morristown. In 1898, the school was reorganized and renamed Morristown School by three Harvard graduates of the class of 1888: Thomas Quincy Browne, Arthur Pierce Butler and Francis Call Woodman.
The core of the Whippany Road campus, now Beard Hall, Grant Hall and the South Wing, were built over a period of 90 days in the summer of 1896 by John Collins, for whom a section of Morris Township is now named.
Rudyard Kipling was a resident lecturer at the Morristown School in the first years of the 20th century.
Morristown merged with the Beard School, also founded in 1891, the former Miss Beard's School of Orange, N.J.
The School's motto, "Ad Astra Per Aspera," which, when translated from Latin means, "To the stars through hard work" was originally the motto of the Beard School. The Morristown School had two mottos in its history: "Civitas," meaning citizenship and "Orbis Aratro Pendet," meaning, "The world hangs in the work of the plow." The Morristown seal, the core of which remains a part of the Morristown-Beard seal, features a crimson shield with a plow and a lion - a symbol of the Morris family for whom the town and county are named. The School's arms, therefore, represent both New Jersey and Morris County.
Among the School's relics is "Oscar," a set of 15th century Armor and the unofficial mascot of the Morristown School era.
Between 1997 and 2004, Beard and Grant Halls were rebuilt to house the History, English and World Languages Departments as part of a $13 million capital campaign. The project included the addition of the Anderson Library, a new student center and several offices. The School recently completed another capital campaign to renovate its athletic facilities. The project included the installation of two new FieldTurf playing surfaces, a state-of-the-art running track and the creation of The Crimson Terrace - a gathering place for MBS fans.

Clubs and extracurricular activities

Some of the clubs and activities offered at the School include: Art Club, Contemporary Music Workshop, Drama Club, Film Club, Foster Care Club, Mariah (art & literary magazine), Mu Alpha Theta, Model U.N., Salmagundi (yearbook), Service Committee, Business Club, and the Student Government Association. The Crimson Sun, the student newspaper, has received numerous awards in recent years, including bronze and silver medals from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The School requires community service of all students in grades 9 - 12. Students serve their communities in the following ways: organizing campus blood drives, participating in local programs like Adopt-A-Road, and volunteering in area service organizations
including Neighborhood House and Matheny Medical and Educational Center.

Athletics

Morristown-Beard School competes against 17 other high schools in the Colonial Hills Conference.

The School's mascot is a bear, but athletic teams compete as the Crimson, a century-old title derived from the Morristown School's deep connections to Harvard.

The Boys' Baseball team were the 2005 NJSIAA Non-Public North B State Champions and the 2007 Prep B State Championship.

The Boys' Ice Hockey team won the 1980, 1982, 1983, 1994 and 2006 Mennen Cup and the 1974, 1975, 1980, 1982, 1983, 1984, 1991, 1997, 2005, and 2007 NJISAA Prep Title.

The Girls' Ice Hockey Team won the 2007 Women's Interscholastic Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic Championship.

The Boys' Golf Team won the 2007 Morris County Tournament.

The Morristown-Beard football team went to the state championships at Giants Stadium in November 2007, falling 28-7 to Paterson Catholic High School.

Joan Caulfield c. 1940 - Actress.

Bruce Driver c. 1980, a professional hockey player on the New Jersey Devils as well as the New York Rangers, and the coach of the M-B hockey team 2007.

Luis A. Ferré c. 1920 - Governor of Puerto Rico from 1969-1973.

Josiah Macy 1901 - heir to the Macy's department store fortune and served on the School's board of trustees well into the 1930s.

Joseph Nye 1954 - co-founder of the international relations theory "neoliberalism."served as deputy secretary of defense and later as deputy secretary of state. A Rhodes Scholar, Nye is currently the Sultan of Oman Professor of International Relations at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government, of which he also served as dean.

John Reed - 1906. Class prefect. Journalist and revolutionary who wrote Ten Days that Shook the World. The only American to be buried in the Kremlin. Copies of Reed's Morristown letters and other ephemera were presented by a delegation from the School to Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev in the late 1980s.

Jyles Tucker (1983-), Four-year starter on the school's football team, now linebacker for the San Diego Chargers.

Colin Larmond Jr. (1989-)- All-State football wide receiver, signed to play for Boston College.

Ken Monteith (1989-)Starting pitcher for the State Championship Team, signed to play for Withrop University.

Jerome Brown (1990-) All Group Track & Field runner, signed to run for La Salle University.
